UIU unrest: Pvt universities voice concern, urge solution thru dialogue

The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) has expressed deep concern over the recent unrest at United International University (UIU) that led to the indefinite suspension of academic activities.
In a press release today, signed by APUB Chairman Md Sabur Khan and Secretary General Ishteaque Abedin, the association said that the situation has adversely affected students, faculty members, and administrative staff.
The United International University (UIU) was declared closed for an indefinite period on April 28, following the resignation of its vice chancellor and 11 department heads.
APUB stressed that any issues relating to students or their legitimate demands should be presented in writing to the university authorities. If satisfactory resolutions are not reached, students are encouraged to seek redress through appropriate stakeholders, including the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education.
"Under no circumstances should academic activities be disrupted due to untoward incidents," the statement said, noting that students of private universities largely depend on the hard-earned financial resources of their families to pursue higher education.
The timely completion of academic programmes is essential to remain competitive globally, APUB said, warning that delays could hinder students' future prospects.
The association also highlighted the generally disciplined and respectable image of students from private universities, both at home and abroad. To protect this reputation and prevent any external provocation or incidents leading to campus closures or tragedies, students must exercise caution, it added.
Simultaneously, the statement urged students to uphold academic commitment, maintain respect for faculty members, and safeguard the honour of their institutions.
APUB called for a quick and amicable resolution to the crisis through a "tolerant, lawful, and responsible approach" from all parties involved. It also urged the wholehearted cooperation of everyone to ensure a peaceful and uninterrupted academic environment across private university campuses.
