A man was shot dead and 15 were injured as BNP activists clashed with Awami League men and law enforcers in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar this afternoon.

It was not clear whether Zakir Hossain, 50, was hit by bullets from the gun of police or the activists.

The opposition activists vandalised at least 50 vehicles and blocked the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway during the clash.

Police picked up four people over the vandalism, Ranjit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Chakaria Police Station, told our Cox's Bazar correspondent.

The highway remained blocked till 6:30pm when the report was filed.

Around 3:00pm, opposition activists tried to bring out a procession with the body of their fellow activist who died in police custody last night, but police intercepted them, prompting the clash.

The clash turned more violent as the ruling AL men joined police around 3:20pm.

The law enforcers used teargas and fired several blank shots to disperse the opposition men, the OC said.
