Woman stabs husband, 'takes own life over his affair'
A woman allegedly died by suicide after stabbing her husband and giving sedatives to her two children over her husband's reported extramarital affairs in the capital's Jatrabari yesterday.
The deceased is Jyotsna Begum, 35, a resident of Golapbagh in Jatrabari.
Before hanging herself with the ceiling at their rented flat, Jyotsna stabbed her husband Swapan Mia, 45, a salesperson at a superstore, with a machete, Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Quoting Jyotsna's neighbours, the OC said the couple was often locked in altercations over the “extramarital affairs” of Swapan, who always refuted the allegation.
Police after primary investigation said the woman gave the children sedatives mixing with their food on Thursday night and made them unconscious. Swapan and Jyotsna were locked in a quarrel in the morning. At one stage, Jyotsna stabbed her husband.
Neighbours entered the flat around 12:30pm breaking open its door and found Swapan lying on the floor. The two children, including a girl, were still sleeping and the body of their mother was hanging with the ceiling in another room, said police, adding that the four were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Jyotsna dead.
Swapan was undergoing treatment at DMCH in a critical condition. Doctors said his condition was deteriorating, said Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost.
Both the children, aged between 8 and 14, are out of danger.
The woman's body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Jyotsna's cousin Abdul Karim told The Daily Star that the couple got married around 18 years ago and he did not witness any problem between them.
