Vehicles torched, bombs blasted in capital

Five vehicles were torched and 15 crude bombs blasted in different areas of the capital this morning, on the last day of BNP-led 18-party opposition combine-sponsored 48-hour blockade.
At least 20 people were injured as the opposition activists clashed with law enforcers blocking Dhaka-Aricha highway at Phulbaria in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.
The opposition combine called the blockade of roads, rail and waterways rejecting the schedule for the 10th parliamentary election.
The opposition men set fire to thee private cars at Ashkona in Uttara, a pickup van at Naya Bazar in Old Dhaka and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Kalshi of Mirpur, report our correspondents covering the event.
Law enforcers also rounded up a pro-blockade activist with four crude bombs from Kalshi in Mirpur.
The incidents of explosions were reported from Gabtoli, Mirpur and Ashkona in Uttara.
UTTARA
A group of 10 to 12 pro-blockade activists set fire to thee private cars in Ashkona area near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 9:45am, Abul Hasan, a guard of a private bank, told The Daily Star.
Police shots 17 rounds to disperse the activists there, said Mehedi Hasan, a sub-inspector of Airport Police Station.
MIRPUR
The opposition men torched a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Kalshi area of Mirpur and blasted four crude bombs there around 8:30am.
Police also picked up a blockader with four crude bombs while he was setting fire to the three-wheller.
OLD DHAKA
Blockaders set fire to a pickup van at Naya Bazar in Old Dhaka around 10:45am. A group of opposition men came out of a roadside ally and at first vandalised the van. Later, they left the scene setting ablaze to the vehicle.
GABTOLI
The pro-blockade activists blasted eight crude bombs at different points of Gabtoli in a span of 15 minutes from 6:15am.
SAVAR
Several hundred leaders and activists of the 18-party opposition clashed with law enforcers blocking Dhaka-Aricha highway at Phulbaria around 9:00am, leaving at least 20 people injured.
Police charged batons and fires several rounds of teargas canisters and rubber bullets when the opposition men hurled brick chips at the law enforcers, reports our Savar correspondent quoting witnesses.
