Making A Difference

Pre-interview checklist

Interviews get us all worked up. They are terrifying, but at the same time, very easy to master. While at the end of the day it's all common sense, it's easy to forget the most obvious things as well as the not-so-obvious ones. Don't panic. Follow our checklist and become a pro at interviews.

Do your homework

It's important to do adequate research on the company or institution that you are hoping to get in. Besides the goals and objectives of the organisation, it's important to know the experiences, skills and interests that would be beneficial to the position you are applying for. Prior research gives you the edge you need and a better understanding of how your qualities and strengths can be applied to the job.

Imagine the whole scenario in your head (and own it)

Prepare questions that you expect them to ask in advance. Consider how you'll explain problematic aspects of your CV or parts that make you nervous. Keep practicing your answer until it becomes second nature. This will also help you feel less stressed. You can rehearse the entire event with a friend. Boost your confidence by switching into the role of interviewer and visualising what is expected of you.

Master your positive thinking skills

Persuade yourself that you are prepared to the best of your abilities and it will all be a wonderful experience. Keep thinking positive thoughts. Stick them all over your mirror. Why not script a whole musical on just how optimistic you are? Try reducing the importance of the interview in your mind. Don't let it intimidate you. Try focusing on other parts, for example, the new people you will be meeting, the delicious cake you will be treating yourself to afterwards, the super cool office place you're going to be sitting in, etc.  Relax. You've got this.

Prepare everything you will need the night before

You don't need any extra worries and stress. Pack an awesome folder with everything that is important—your CV, certificates and recommendation letters, pens, anything you might need. Plan out what you're going to wear, get it ironed and make sure to carry your lucky charm! Get plenty of sleep the night before and plan out your journey, aiming to reach at least 15 minutes beforehand. Eat a healthy breakfast, avoid excess caffeine and check all your required documents one last time before heading out.

Look the part

Dress smartly and you'll nail the first impression. You want them to know that you're serious about getting the job, and your clothes say a lot about you and how sincere you are about a certain place. No matter how impressive your speaking skills are, a shabby outfit will always leave a hint of doubt in the minds of the interviewers. Show them you deserve this part.
