Facing the Floods
A major obstacle faced by city dwellers every other day is that of rainwater flooding the streets. Every year, the issue of water logging gets worse, without any plans or proposals from the government for solutions. Unfortunately looking for a quick remedy is not the answer. Thinkers, policy makers and city planners need to put heads together for a way to store large amount of rainwater, which can be used in many parts of the city. Authorities need to do their part when it comes to clearing the drainage system, cutting pathways for the rain to flow into the river and also to avoid creating gridlocks in the city, and not going into a standstill mode all together. Last week, streets of Kalshi, Gulshan, Bashundhara, parts of Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi were flooded with knee deep rain water, added with gridlocks and traffic congestion. It is high time we looked for solutions, before the city fails altogether. Read the spotlight to know more about this issue on pages 8-9.
