Model commits ‘suicide’ in Dhaka

A female model allegedly committed suicide early today after a quarrel with her husband in Mohakhali area of Dhaka.

The deceased, Mahapara Rahman Shoilee alias Nitti, 28, daughter of retired superintendent of police Motiur Rahman, hanged herself after a quarrel with her husband, said Sreedham Chandro Roy, sub inspector of Banani Police Station, quoting her husband Abhijit Bachhi.

Her husband took the unconscious body to Mohakhali’s Metropolitan Hospital where the duty doctor declared her dead at 2:45am, the SI said.

However, locals saw Abhijit beating Nitti while they were entering their home at midnight, eyewitness told the police. “One hour later he was carrying her body out,” they added.

According to her father Motiur, after a first failed marriage, Nitti married Abhijit but without family’s consent.

“I did not approve of her chosen career (modeling) as well,” Motiur added.

Two days ago, Nitti had told her father that she was in an abusive marriage and was often beaten by Abhijit, but Motiur disregarded the matter at that time.

Police detained the husband for questioning and the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the SI said.

Meanwhile, Motiur told The Daily Star that he would file a case against Abhijit for instigating his daughter’s suicide.
