General passengers may face some problems as the civil aviation authorities have tightened security at all airports across the country following two recent attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon said today.

As part of the government’s zero tolerance policy against terrorism, security has been beefed up in all domestic and international airports, the minister told journalists at a briefing in Dhaka this morning.

“The regular passengers have to accept this for the greater good of the country,” the minister said.

He however did not give details on the steps that have been taken by the government at the airport on security grounds.

The minister addressed the media after holding a meeting with high officials of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh on security issues at Kurmitola this morning.

After the terror attacks in Dhaka, there will be international pressure to enhance security at the airports, he said.

The minister also mentioned that Special US envoy Nisha Desai Biswal was able to hold meetings in Bangladesh because the government is on the back foot as the country is reeling from the terror attacks.

Those who wanted to indentify Bangladesh as a country of militancy will be successful if proper security measures are not taken, he added.

About banning cargo from Bangladesh by UK, Australia and Germany, the minister said it was a political decision, not taken on security grounds.

“We will resolve the issue through discussion on the diplomatic levels.”
