A Dhaka court today placed a caretaker of a house at Rupnagar in Dhaka’s Mirpur area, on a two-day remand for his alleged involvement with renting out a flat to one of suspected Gulshan café attackers.

Detectives arrested Daud Patwary, 31, of Begumganj in Noakhali, from Rupnagar in the city’s Mirpur area, for renting out a flat to one Ismail Hossain allegedly involved with Gulshan café attacks, court sources said.

Metropolitan Magistrate Nurunnahar Yeasmin passed the order after Inspector Humayun Kabir of the counter-terrorism unit of DMP, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced him before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Earlier in the day, Daud was shown arrested under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

In the remand prayer, the IO said Daud, a caretaker of House No. 2, Road No. 1 of Arifabad Housing at Rupnagar in Mirpur, had given a flat to Ismail who was allegedly involved with the Gulshan café attacks in July.

“But he failed to give his full address and other information. So he needs to be remanded to know details about the suspected militant,” the IO added.

Earlier on July 16, police arrested four others for renting out a flat to suspected Gulshan café attackers and they were remanded for eight days.

They are: Gias Uddin Ahsan, dean of North South University’s School of Health and Life Sciences and owner of the house, his nephew Alam Chowdhury; and manager of the building Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin.

The same day, police arrested the owner of the Shewrapara flat, Nurul Islam, 68, for not collecting tenants’ information while renting out the flat and allegedly sheltering militants. They were shown arrested under section of the (CrPC).

All the four were earlier sent to jail after completion of their remand.

On July 1, armed militants attacked the Holey Artisan Bakery at diplomatic zone in Dhaka’s Gulshan area and killed 20 hostages -- nine Italian, seven Japanese, two Bangladeshis, one Indian and one Bangladesh-born US citizen. Two police officers were also killed.
