A Bangladeshi young man was shot by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) members on Telkupi border in Shibganj upazila, Chapainawabganj last night.

The victim was identified as Md Abir Ali, 23, son of Abdul Latif of Telkupi village in the upazila, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.

Lt Col SM Abul Ehsan, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-9, said BSF troops from Gopalnagar camp opened fire on Abir around 8:00pm, leaving him injured.

He was first admitted to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, and then to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

BSF men shot at Abir when he was cutting barbwire fence on the border to enter the Indian territory, the commanding officer said.

He tried to go to India to smuggle either cattle or phensidyl into Bangladesh, he added.

Asked whether Abir would be arrested, the CO said legal action will be taken against him.

Family members however claimed that Abir was a cattle trader.
