A man who has been serving 17 years in prison without trial in a murder case secured bail today.
The High Court asked a Dhaka court to finish trial proceedings against Md Shipon within three months. The HC told authorities to rehabilitate him if he no longer has a home after walking out.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after Shipon was produced before it this morning. The bench will give some observations in its full order.
Shipon has been languishing in Kashimpur Jail-2 in Gazipur for 17 years.
On October 30, the same HC bench passed an order and rule following a report broadcast by a private television channel about sufferings of Shipon in jail.
A Supreme Court lawyer, placed the record of the TV report before the HC judges and prayed for passing necessary orders.
According to the report, a case was filed with Sutrapur Police Station on October 25, 1994 on charge of killing one Mahtab.
The following year, police submitted a charge sheet against six including Shipon to the trial court.
Shipon was arrested on November 7, 2000. The case is pending with the Environment Appellate Tribunal in Dhaka, Cumar Debul Dey told The Daily Star.
