The Supreme Court today upheld the High Court verdict that maintained Dhaka University's decision to allow an admission seeker to sit for the university entry examination only once.

The four-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after dismissing an appeal against the High Court verdict that upheld the DU decision.

In the appeal, guardians of 26 admission seekers prayed to the appellate division to direct DU authorities to allow the students, who passed the HSC examinations last year, to sit for the test second time this year.

Following a writ petition, the HC on July 8 rejected the writ petition filed by the guardians and upheld the DU decision that had barred admission seekers from sitting for the test for the second time.

In the writ petition, the guardians challenged the legality of the university's decision and said the DU authorities' decision is a violation of the fundamental principle of equal opportunity for education.

Articles 15, 17 and 19 of the constitution have ensured equal education opportunity for all, said the petition.

The DU authorities took the decision on October 15 last year.
