3 Buet students punished for ‘militant link’

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) today expelled three students permanently from their dormitories for their alleged involvement in militancy.

One of them, a student of mechanical engineering department, was also expelled from the university for one semester in this connection. Besides, two other students were also warned.

“The university authorities have made the decision as they were trying to destabilise the university environment by involving themselves in militancy,” Dr Delwar Hossain, director of the Students’ Welfare of Buet told The Daily Star.

The decision was an outcome of the disciplinary committee meeting held soon after the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders handed over 10 students to the university authorities for their alleged links with militancy, he added.

Leaflets and jihadi books of Islami Shasantantra Chhatra Andolan, student wing of Chormonai Pir backed by Islami Andolon Bangladesh were found from their possessions, the Buet teacher said.

“We will hand over the evidences to the police station concerned to verify whether these are linked with militancy,” he added.

Earlier today, leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League handed over nine students to the university authorities alleging their links with militancy.

BCL men first identified a student of the university’s Nazrul Islam Hall as a militant activist last night, Abu Sayeed Kanak, BCL general secretary of the university, told The Daily Star.

“After he confessed that he is an activist of Islami Gonotantrik Andolon, we identified eight more students of the hall who have links with the organization,” Kanak said.

The nine were handed over to the university administration this afternoon.

Some of the nine students were earlier involved with Jamaat-e-Islami’s student front Islami Chhatra Shibir, according to Kanak.
