Being a poet myself, I know how difficult it is to fit an entire story in a few words and two lines. Not only did Kingkor Ehsan do exactly that in the novel, but also created the poems, broke them into pieces and turned them to stories again.
He also showcased an amazing way of starting each chapter with a couplet. This combination will show the reader as to how happiness and sadness works both selfishly and selflessly. The boy, narrator, also teaches us how moving on with life is done with uncountable challenges and the 'God's Sense of Humour'.
With strong positioning of around 15 characters and twists of family and friends turning to foes and vice versa, including school-going Ruby (who believes chocolates are the solution to all kinds of pain) to Sandeep Mukharjee -- a Godfather of Kolkata crime scene - the book is a gem.
The boy, mostly due to consecutive unfortunate events, grows old quicker than the calendar.
'Middleclass' is a MUST READ book and do keep your eyes on 'Kingkor Ehsan' as I believe this name is destined to be a master of the Bengali Literature Scene.
The writer is a Poet and Journalist.
