Man shot dead while snatching accused from custody
A man was shot dead last night while snatching an accused from police custody in Savar’s Birulia, at the outskirts of capital Dhaka.
The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain, 32, son of Shahidul Islam, a local, our Savar correspondent reports quoting police.
Savar Model police raided Shampur village to hunt down Al-Amin Hossain, an accused in at least 17 cases, around 11:00pm, said Mahbubur Rahman, senior assistant superintendent of Savar police.
“Al-Amin’s followers raised a false alarm. They used loudspeakers to announce that robbers had attacked their house. He opened fire on police,” the police official said.
At one stage, family members of Al-Amin managed to snatch him from police custody, he said. Police opened gunfire in self defence and Ismail, an aide of Amin, came in line of the fire.
His body was kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Four policemen including the drive leader Sub-Inspector Tariqul sustained injuries and were undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College and Hospital.
Ismail’s brother Ramjan Ali claimed that although his brother was present with Al-Amin during the incident but he had no links with criminal activities.
