HC asks cop why he mentioned alive man dead

The High Court today asked the officer-in-charge of Akhaura Police Station in Brahmanbaria to appear before it on July 23 for reporting a businessman as dead when in fact he was alive.

OC Mosharraf Hossain Tarafdar will have to appear before the High Court on July 7 to explain why he has mentioned Azad Hossain Bhuiyan from Bara-kuripika village in Akhaura as dead in his report.

The High Court bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Hussain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Azad Hossain.

The petitioner’s lawyer Kaiser Zahid Bhuiyan told The Daily Star that Azad Hossain will go to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj later in this month.

A permanent resident and businessmen of Akhaura upazila, Bhuiyan has already deposited necessary money for hajj pilgrimage and passport. But the OC submitted a police verification report to the Special Branch office on June 20 saying that Azad Hossain has died, the lawyer said.

Advocate Kaiser also said his client has filed a writ petition with the High Court on July 11 seeking its directive upon the police to correct the police verification report so that Azad can go to Saudi Arabia for hajj.

A police clearance is a required document for those wishing to go for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah.
