Journalists today threatened to besiege the secretariat on July 30 if the government does not form a ninth wage board for them within the stipulated dateline.

Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) threatened the move at a rally held near Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

BFUJ President Manjurul Ashan Bulbul said, “We will besiege the secretariat. We will also demand the resignation of the information minister if the wage board declaration doesn’t come by July 29”.

While addressing the rally, he also urged the government to hand the cases filed against journalists under section 57 of the ICT Act over to Bangladesh Press Council.

Journalists’ demand for a fresh wage board comes in purview of the government’s latest salary hike for civil servants – where the pay was doubled.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has, however, said that it was not because of the government that the wage board is being delayed, but the nonchalant attitude of media owners.
