SC stays Dhaka University VC-elect panel
The vice chancellor-elect panel of Dhaka University that was formed amid protest from a quarter of students has been stayed by the Supreme Court.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division allowed Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique to continue his duties as the vice chancellor of Dhaka University in the mean time.
It asked the High Court to hear and dispose of by four weeks the rule it issued over legality of the senate meeting that formed the VC-elect panel on July 29.
The order was passed today during a full bench hearing of an appeal, filed by Dhaka University authority, challenging the High Court order that had stayed the senate meeting.
Previously, chamber judge of the Supreme Court had stayed the High Court ruling – that allowed the senate meeting to take place – and forwarded the matter to a full bench.
Current VC AAMS Arefin Siddique is a member of the three-man panel formed to select Dhaka University’s next vice chancellor. His two-time term has neared its end.
However, a section of students had protested outside the gates of senate building on that day demanding the presence of student representatives in the senate panel.
