Tagore remembered in Mymensingh

The 76th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was observed at Govt Ananda Mohan College in Mymensingh town on Sunday.

Marking the occasion, teachers and students of the college's Bengali Department organised a discussion in the college's auditorium.

The day's programme also included poetry recitation from the bard including from Geetanjali, sources said.

The fourth year students of the department took part in group recitation from the poet. The group was led by Aysha Siddiqua.

Earlier, a discussion on the life and work was held attended by teachers and students of the department.

Department's associate professor AKM Fazlul Haque; its assistant professors-- Mohammad Kamrul Hasan and  Al Maksud; and Ahsan Ibne Masud, a folklore researcher addressed the discussion, among others.

 Prof Jannatul Ferdous, chairman of the department presided over the discussion.

The speakers said that through winning Novel Prize, the poet established his creative credentials both in Bangladesh and the world.

The secular philosophy of the poet and his sensitivity to marginalised people is an asset of Bengali Literature, said the speakers adding that there was a profound touch of then 'Purbo Bangla' in many of his writings'.

They also emphasised the need to spread cultural activities at all educational levels to make for a creative nation.

The people of Mymensingh region are proud of the bard who visited different areas of Mymensingh including Alexander Castle and Govt Ananda Mohan College in 1926, they informed.
