Doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) conducted the second surgery on the right hand of Muktamoni, the 12-year-old girl from Satkhira this morning.

Muktamoni underwent a successful surgery and she is doing well, Samanta Lal Sen, national coordinator of DMCH's Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, told The Daily Star

The 45-minute-long surgery that started at 9:30am has been successful and she was doing fine, Dr Sen said.

During the 45-minute operation at the DMCH burn unit, doctors removed tumour from her upper arm and shoulder, he said.

She may have to go through more surgeries, he added.

More patients suffering from rare medical conditions are coming to the hospital following the successful surgeries Muktamoni and Abul Bajandar, Dr Sen said.

The physicians took the decision to conduct the surgery after the second biopsy found the existence of tumor in blood vessels on Muktamoni’s right arm on August 18.

Muktamoni is afflicted by a disease mainly in her right hand, a condition leading to her hand swelling up like a bee hive.

On August 12, doctors removed a three-kilogramme tumour from her abnormally swelled right arm in a surgery.

It is expected that Muktamoni would have to stay in DMCH six more months for further surgery. She was admitted to the hospital on July 11.

A 13-member medical board was formed to look into the girl's case and on August 8 they decided to operate after a biopsy showed a tumour in the artery of her hand.

Abul Bajandar, the fourth man in the world with the treeman illness and the first reported case in the country, has been suffering from a rare skin disorder caused by a virus named human papillomaviruses, was admitted to the institute on January 30, 2016.

The medical team of DMCH burn unit treating Bangladesh's first "treeman" Abul Bajandar performed 24 surgeries on him in so far warts partially regrew on his hand.
