Boy ‘commits suicide after playing Blue Whale game’

A teenaged tea vendor allegedly committed suicide in Mirpur of Dhaka last night after “playing the Blue Whale online game”, police suspect.

Sayem Dewan, 15, son of Babu Dewan, “committed suicide” by hanging himself with a ceiling fan around 10:00pm in his tin-shed house of West Kazipara, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Mirpur Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Police suspected the boy might have committed suicide after being influenced by the sick online game as the law enforcers found an image of whale on the victim’s left hand drawn using blade, the OC said.

The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Morgue for autopsy.

“We are examining the victim’s smartphone to be ascertained whether he played the online game or not,” he added. 

The sources from the morgue have also confirmed the “existence of the blade cut whale engraved on the victim’s left hand”.

The victim’s father told The Daily Star that he bought the boy a smartphone just three months ago.

“My son used to play video games,” he added.
