First Community Policing Day observed
Bangladesh Police today observed ‘Community Policing Day’ for the first time with a goal to strengthen community policing.
Marking the day, a rally was brought out from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters in the capital around 10:00am. The rally ended at the Institution of Diploma Engineers' Bangladesh.
Cultural and discussion programmes were arranged in the IEB building marking the day. Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, inaugurated the events by lighting of a lamp.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah and other high officials of police joined the programme.
Speaking on the discussion, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that the numbers of filing cases have decreased as members of community police manage to dispose of small disputes in throughout the country.
The minister also urged country’s people to assist police for the sake of building Bangladesh safe.
IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque said that the numbers of crimes will reduce if the gap between police and general people are reduced.
The community police are working against illegal drugs, militancy and terrorism but their activities will have to be regular.
Asaduzzaman Mia said it was not possible to ensure stability and order without the help of people.
From now on, the day will be observed every year on the last Saturday of October.
According to police headquarter database, the crime prevention centre (community policing) was established in 2008. In last two years, the community police resolved 9161 land dispute in 2015 and 21880 in 2016, 6388 money transaction and 12484 in 2016 and 6892 family conflicts in 2015 and 12832 in 2016.
