SC legal aid body seeks undertrial prisoners’ details
The Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee today requested the inspector general of prisons to submit updated list of undertrial prisoners who are suffering in jails more than seven years across the country.
The SC committee has not given any time limit to the IG prisons for submitting the report, Ripan Pal Sku, an official of the SC legal aid committee, told The Daily Star.
Earlier on November 15, last year, the SC legal aid committee had asked the IG prisons seeking the details of undertrial prisoners who have been suffering in jail more than five years and ten years across the country.
The IG prisons had later informed the SC committee that there were 460 under trial prisoners who are serving in jail for more than five years and ten years across the country.
Then the HC granted bail to around 20 undertrial prisoners at different times on suo moto rules.
