UIU Theatre & Film Club recently organised Inter University Short Film Festival - Lights Camera Action 2017 – held at UIU Auditorium. Directors Mostafa Sarwar Farooqi, Dipankar Dipan and Samir Ahmed were present as the jury. This year, a total of 110 short films from 32 universities and 11 colleges participated in the event.

NSU holds seminar by Rotary Foundation chief

The event "Doing good in the world and new generations" by Paul A Netzel, World Chief of the Rotary Foundation was held on November 15, 2017 at North South University Auditorium. Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities and serve them locally and around the world.

The Rotary Foundation Chair, Paul A Netzel attended the event as the chief guest. Rtn FH Arif, District Governor (2017-2018), Rotary international District 3281, Bangladesh; Md. Shajahan, Chairman, BOT; MA Kashem and Rehana Rahman, Members, BOT; and Prof. Atiqul Islam, VC, NSU were also present.

 

Google Business GroupSonargaon launches "Womenwill"

Google Business Group Sonargaon recently carried out the launching ceremony of its premier women chapter, Womenwill, at the United International University (UIU) premises. An initiative from Google, Womenwill, is geared towards enhancing digital literacy, entrepreneurship, inclusive workplace and leadership in women.

The session titled "Women will conquer: Fostering Diversity and Inclusion to Help Women Succeed" kicked off with Narmin Tartila Banu, Lead, Womenwill, and Manager, Google Business Group Sonargaon introducing Womenwill and its objectives. Misha Mahjabeen, General Manager, Purnava at Renata Ltd.; Deneb Zeenat Latif, Director, Organizational Development Advisory Services, Magnum Management Consulting; Tanvira Choudhury, HR Business Partner - Supply Chain, Unilever; Nurun Nahar Nargish, Photographer, Ministry of Health; and Hasan Mazhar Pial, Category Manager, Unilever, conducted separate sessions.

The programme was sponsored by Purnava by Renata, supported by IEEUIUWIE, facilitated by UIU Career and Counseling Center. The venue partner was UIU and digital partner was Boomerang Digital.

 

AIUB student receives award at ICT Expo 2017

Bangladesh ICT Expo 2017 was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) with the theme of "Make in Bangladesh". It was a 3-day long session starting from October 18, 2017. Md. Sadad Mahamud of Department of EEE, AIUB, conquered a position among the top 5 groups with an attractive project named "Watch IT: An Assistive Device for Speaking and Hearing Impaired". He did this project under the supervision of Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan, Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering and Special Assistant, OSA, AIUB. By using this device impaired person can minimise their communication problems with normal person and that can give imperative impact on the betterment of the society. Md. Sadad Mahamud received Microsoft Bangladesh Limited brand ambassadorship for next 1 year.

 

CIU hosts an exchange of views

Chittagong Independent University (CIU) authorities organised an exchange of views with media personnel in the port city.

Dr. Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury, VC of CIU, said the aim of the entrepreneurs of private universities should be to promote education and to create knowledge.

Kalim Sarwar, president of Chittagong Press Club, said private universities in Chittagong will have to upgrade their standard to a level so that students in the port city can receive world class education.

Nazimuddin Shyamal, former general secretary of Chittagong Union of Journalists, opined that the private universities should keep a provision of 10 percent quota of full-free studentship for the talented and needy students.

Tawhid Samad, chairman of the CIU BOT, said the activity of education is more important than any other activity in a country.

 

IUB awards Green Geniuses for generating outstanding ideas

The Green Planet Club of Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), in association with the Department of Environmental Science, organised its flagship event and an award giving ceremony – "Green Genius" on November 15, 2017 at IUB's own campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.

Prof. Milan Pagon, Pro-VC of the university was the chief guest while Dr. Md. Abdul Khaleque, Dean, School of Environmental Science and Management, IUB delivered the inaugural speech.

The idea behind Green Genius was to be able to encompass the young minds of the university to get them thinking about how to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the university and how to make the campus greener.

Faizaa Fariya Hridi became the champion while Mushfiqur Rahman Saad grabbed the 1st runner-up trophy and Samiur Rahman secured the 2nd runner-up position. Geniuses of 4th and 5th positions, Farina Saberin Hoque and Arunima Deepti were also given certificates of recognition for their remarkable ideas. 

 

USA holds Convocation 2017

The 1221 graduates from schools of University of South Asia (USA) were conferred certificates at the convocation on November 18, 2017. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid MP was present as the chief guest of the convocation.

Prof. Dr. M. A. Muhit, Chairman, BOT, USA, hoped the graduates would realise that success is not limited only to having a good degree or job - it is also important to work towards building an inclusive society. Eminent media personality Dr. Abdun Noor Tushar was the convocation speaker. The VC of the university, Prof. Dr. M. A. Wadud Mandal and Pro-VC Prof. Dr. M Dildar Hossain were present at the programme. Shagufe Hossain, Founder, Leaping Boundaries, graced the occasion as the special guest speaker.

 

DIU organises Global Entrepreneurship Week 2017 

The 5 day-long celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2017 ended on November 19, 2017 through distributing awards among the winners of Business Proposal Competition.

Amir Hossain Amu, MP, Minister of Industries, was present as the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Twelve winners were awarded in different categories in the Business Proposal Competition in the closing and award giving ceremony. 

The chief guest said, by arranging Global Entrepreneurship Week, DIU has taken a great initiative and he urged other universities to come forward to strengthen the university–industry linkage. 

Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, BOT, DIU said, the Ministry of Industry, BSCIC, BITAC, SME Foundation and other organisations of the government have been doing activities to create entrepreneurs.
