What is happen to our education?

Scratching your head while reading the title? Terribly phrased questions like "What is happen to disobey law?", "What would happen if no the Mujibnagar govt was formed?", "What is happened in the people of this country as a result of 'divide and rule' policy of British?" welcomed the 5th graders appearing for their BGS examination on November 21, 2017. The confusing answer options added to the woe. For instance, all the options to the 'Mujibnagar' and 'divide and rule' questions seemed correct, and hence, it was confusing for the students to confirm one answer.

The questions along with the answers were so baffling that even the adults would have to rack their brains to score well. And the worst part is that they still wouldn't be able to find the correct answers.

Incorrect phrasing horrors are making the public wonder how the authorities could come up with such confusing questions. Also, the event has damaged people's faith in the so called 'English Version' of National Curriculum.

Now, the ocean of ranting, trolling, complaining, and of course, memes originating from the shocking errors demand unveiling the reasons behind the scenario, shed light on the sufferings of the students, and provide a sneak peek at the future of this nation if this becomes a norm.

One of the reasons behind this debacle was certainly the careless initiative taken by the authorities. If the authorities had been cautious enough to sort out the confusions and their impacts on 5th graders and had taken steps to ensure better translation, the students wouldn't have had to face such a fate.

It's only normal for a student to learn from his/her curriculum. Other than the ones who are over-achievers or have cautious parents, such errors in questions are futile. The reality remains, in our country there are many who are weak in English and have little or no support. The authorities play a pivotal character here, and the damage done is unthinkable when these students have no options but to blindly trust the errors. Eventually, the errors are ingrained in them, which create a contagious effect. If such occurrences continue to grow then many students will be left with inabilities to properly communicate in this competitive world. Also, they will keep on repeating the mistakes confidently.

From the beginning of school years, one is bound to trust their respective curriculum, and in such an instance, it is tough for a student of 5th grade to contradict the question that's served before them – partly because of the deaf ears they are turned to and mostly because of the psychology of an 11-12 year old. Keeping that in mind, the board should take steps to ensure that the questions are grammatically correct and make perfect sense, so that impressionable children are not unnecessarily confused.

Next time another "I am GPA 5" video comes out and we all decide to laugh at the students, let's also consider the system that's grooming them for the real world.
