Abduction attempt: Microbus hired from rent-a-car service
The microbus which was used in an attempted abduction by four people in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area yesterday was hired from a rent-a-car service, police said today.
“We are trying to identify the person who rented the vehicle and the four people who were in the microbus. We will carry out drives to arrest them after identification,” Maruf Hossain Sorder, deputy commissioner (Raman division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star.
The police officer, however, declined to name the rent-a-car service.
“We did not find involvement of any police personnel into the incident so far,” said another police officer who is dealing with the attempted abduction.
A crowd yesterday foiled the attempted abduction by the four criminals who identified themselves as detectives and tried to whisk a man in the microbus after he had come out of a bank withdrawing Tk 7 lakh, police and witnesses said.
As the victim cried for help and started kicking on the window glasses of the vehicle in a desperate effort to get free, locals started chasing the microbus, which got stuck in traffic several hundred metres away.
All the four criminals managed to flee before the locals rescued the victim and smashed the microbus with BRTA registration number -- Dhaka Metro Cha--139551.
Some documents, handcuffs and the walkie-talkie were recovered from the microbus.
