NHRC for punishment of Zafar Iqbal’s attackers
Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Haque has urged the authorities concerned to ensure punishment of the culprits who attacked Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal yesterday.
“I urge all the concerned people to take steps for providing proper security to the eminent writer Zafar Iqbal,” the chairman said in a press release issued by NHRC today.
Condemning the attack, NHRC chairman said, “This incident is not expected at all”.
In another press release, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) today condemned the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal and demanded a fair investigation into the incident.
ASK, a rights organisation, also demanded punishment to the real culprits who were behind the attack.
Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal came under a knife attack yesterday. He was initially treated at MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital in Sylhet where he had to be administered 27 stitches and was given two bags of blood.
Later, he was flown to the capital by an air ambulance on the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He reached the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka around midnight.
He is now doing well and is out of danger, a doctor in the CMH said today.
Prof Iqbal, a faculty member of Computer Science and Engineering department at SUST, is an educationalist loved by students of any age across the country.
A noted writer, he is popular among kids especially for his science fiction novels. All his life he has been vocal against communal forces and championing secularism and the ideals of the Liberation War.
