Bangladeshis are religious, not bigots: BNP

People of Bangladesh are religious, but not bigots and they do not support religious extremism, BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon says at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office today. Star file photo.

People of Bangladesh are religious, but not bigots and they do not support religious extremism, says BNP.

“We hope that all foreigners will feel secure in this country that exists on the principle of religious harmony,” Ripon said in a press briefing at the BNP headquarters in Nayapaltan of the capital this afternoon.

Our international friends are investigating the recent killings of two foreign nationals and Islamic State’s involvement in the murders. The government has also clearly stated that there is no existence of IS in the country, he said.

Bangladeshis “never support extremism rather they despise it,” Ripon said while briefing media about the recent situation in the country.

“People of all faiths are religious in this country, but they are not blinded by their religion,” he added.

“When the matter is under investigation, different quarters of the government are blaming the BNP and other opposition parties to tarnish the image of these parties,” Ripon alleged.

Ripon also mentioned that the government is putting pressure on the multinational companies not to publish advertisement in leading dailies The Daily Star and Prothom Alo.

“The government is trying to gag the media financially,” he said.
