Lawyers denied of permission to meet Khaleda

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's lawyers, who tried to meet her at the old Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka this afternoon, denied of permission on legal ground.

A five-member defence counsel led by advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder sought permission from the authority concerned to meet Khaleda around 3:00 pm to take her signatures on vokalatnama of cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka and Narail against her, Masud told The Daily Star.

"The jail authority told us that there was no document relating to the cases in its possession and thus, we have denied of permission to meet her," Masud said.

Khaleda landed in jail on February 8 after she was sentenced five years in jail for misappropriating a donation fund of Zia Orphanage Trust.

The Supreme Court is set to hear tomorrow four separate petitions filed in connection with a High Court order that granted bail to Khaleda in the graft case.

Two of the petitions were filed challenging the HC order that granted the bail and the two others for vacating the SC order that stayed the bail.

The government and the Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday filed two separate leave-to-appeal petitions with the SC challenging the HC order that granted bail to Khaleda.

The office of the attorney general and the ACC both submitted the petitions that also sought an extension of the SC order that stayed the bail order until Sunday.
