The Treasure That is Turkey
For a country that thrives on meat-based food, and with our thriving agriculture, Bangladesh can be a hotspot not only for turkey rearing and consumption, but also export. Of the 70 countries that produce turkey, about 80 percent of global production comes from just five countries -- the US, Germany, Brazil, France and Italy. Exporting turkey meat has proven to be economically beneficial. In Bangladesh, a well reared turkey weighing five-six kilograms can cost Tk 2,000-2,500, if sold at Tk 400 per kilogram. A farmer will need Tk 1,200-1,500 to properly rear a turkey, in which case, every turkey sale will make a Tk 500 profit. Considering the demand of small-scale farming, the demand for turkey will increase within the next three-four years. At present, turkeys are being sold at Tk 3,000-10,000 depending on colour and weight. Turkey meat also has nutritional values considering its low levels of fat, and can be a good alternative to red meat. It is also more cost-effective than beef or mutton. Producing, consuming, and exporting turkey meat has every potential to be the next agricultural feat for Bangladesh.
