Pirlo weighs in on penalty debate
Italy’s legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo who played for Juventus and AC Milan, weighs in on the penalty debate from the Real-Juve game.
Pirlo suggested that in that situation he would have gone crazy as well and understood why Gianluigi Buffon reacted the way he did. The goalkeeper was given a straight red card for arguing with the referee’s decision.
Buffon had described the referee as having a ‘garbage bin for a heart’ after Juventus fought back so superbly from three goals down to tie the match on aggregate, that too at the Santiago Bernabeu.
"But I understand Buffon, I would've gone crazy. I think he exaggerated the part about a crime against the humanity of sports being committed, but it should be understood that it was his last game in the Champions League and he expected to win it”, Pirlo said.
He then weighed in on the debate, implying that in certain situation that may not have been given a penaly.
"The penalty could just as easily have not been given. If the referee is a little more shrewd he could have let it go.
"If I was on the field yesterday it would have burned me a great deal to go out in that way. When you play a game like that and then lose 10 seconds from the end it makes you crazy,” he concluded.
