Tarique submitted passport for asylum: Fakhrul
BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman submitted his passport to the United Kingdom for seeking asylum, the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.
“Submitting passport is a necessary procedure for seeking asylum,” he said, drawing sharp criticism against “propaganda” that the BNP leader has surrendered his Bangladeshi nationality.
“UK authorities gave him travel permit after he submitted his passport. When he will return, he can apply back for his passport and obtain it,” he added, while speaking at a press conference at Nayapaltan.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam has sparked a row after he produced some documents claiming that Tarique had surrendered his Bangladeshi passport and gave up his nationality.
Tarique yesterday served a legal notice on the junior minister seeking proof within the next 10 days about the allegation.
BNP arranged the press conference today in response to Shahriar’s claims yesterday. They said it was a vindictive propaganda against the BNP leadership.
