AL candidate files fresh petition seeking GCC polls
Ruling Awami League’s mayoral candidate for Gazipur City Corporation election has filed a petition with the apex court seeking resumption of the election process that was stayed by the High Court.
The chamber judge of the Appellate Division may hold hearing on Jahangir Alam’s petition later today, Barrister Ashraful Islam Sajib, a lawyer for the petitioner, told The Daily Star.

Citing the petition, he said the High Court had earlier disposed a similar writ petition challenging the legality of inclusion of six mouzas in Shimulia union with Gazipur City Corporation.
Therefore, the writ petition seeking stay on the election cannot be acceptable, he said.
On Monday, BNP’s mayor aspirant Hasan Uddin Sarker filed another petition with the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the High Court order that stalled the GCC election.
SC Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique today sent Hasan Uddin’s petition to the full bench for hearing tomorrow.
Just 10 days before the voting day slated for May 15, a High Court bench on Sunday stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election for three months.
