DU holds 11th National Science Debating Festival

Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Debating Club, University of Dhaka hosted the 11th National Science Debating Festival. Starting on May 9, 2018, the event successfully drew a close on May 12, 2018.

The event focused on the topic of cyber-crime in the age of technological advancements. The various sides of digitalisation and internet-dependency were dissected and discussed by debaters coming in from various institutions.

There were 16 teams for the inter-school debate tournament, 24 teams for inter-college debate tournament and 40 teams for the inter-university debate tournament.

Khulna Debating Family won the inter-school tournament while Dhaka Residential Model College won the inter-college tournament. Bongomata Fozilatunnesa Debating Club from University of Dhaka was the champion in the inter-university tournament.

The awarding ceremony included Dr. Hussain Monsur, former Provost, Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall as the chief guest. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh; Shyamol Kumar Shaha, COO, Transsion Bangladesh Limited; and Abu Bakar Siddique Prince, President, Dhaka University Debating Society, were present as special guests. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shamsur Rahaman was the moderator of the ceremony.

AIUB holds orientation programme for summer 2018

American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) held its orientation programme for the newly enrolled students of undergraduate and graduate programmes for the summer semester 2018 on May 19, 2018 at AIUB permanent campus.

Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, VC, AIUB was present as the chief guest. The programme started with the Director of Student Affairs welcoming the new students and presenting them with the teaching methods, course formations, examination processes and the rules and regulations that must be followed within the campus premises.

Deans of different faculties, department Heads, directors, teachers, and staff members were present during the programme, along with new students and their parents. The orientation programme was organised by Office of Student Affairs (OSA) with the help of Nadia Anwar, Founder and Vice President, Student Affairs.

FBS hosts "Good Luck presents BRANDrill 2018 powered by Click"

Voice of Business from Faculty of Faculty of Business Studies (FBS), University of Dhaka, organised the second instalment of BRANDrill, presented by Goodluck and powered by Click, and sponsored by PRAN-RFL Group.

More than 200 teams from 15 universities from all over the country took part in the competition. There were 3 rounds where the business knowledge and skills of the participants were put to test. The top 10 teams went on to compete in the final round where they were given the task of developing IMC campaign for the respective brands, Good Luck and Click.

The Goal Diggers from FBS, University of Dhaka became the champions, while Neophytes from IUT and Pyro from IBA, DU were awarded as the first and second runners-up respectively. 

The judging panel for the grand finale consisted of Prof. Muhammad Ismail Hossain, Department of Marketing; Md. Iftekhar Alam, Brand Strategy & Creative Lead Manager, Grameenphone; and Sajjadul Islam, Senior Brand Manager, PRAN-RFL Group.

IEEE EU Student Branch hosts "IEEE BDS Student Branch Ex-Com Summit 2018"

IEEE Eastern University (EU) Student Branch successfully hosted the "IEEE Bangladesh Section Student Branch Executive-Committee (Ex-Com) Summit 2018" at Eastern University premises on May 18, 2018. Representatives from 36 student branches of Bangladesh were present during the summit.

The opening speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, EU and Counselor, IEEE EU Student Branch. The guests present during the event included Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Chairman of Nominations and Appointments Section, IEEE BDS; Yeasir Arafat, Vice-Chair of Activity, IEEE BDS; Rakibul Islam Chowdhury, Humanitarian Activities Coordinator; and Raihan Ur Rashid, Publicity Coordinator, IEEE BDS.

Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, IEEE BDS delivered her speech on "IEEE BDS Vision 2018"and "IEEE Award Nomination" and shared the year-long activities of IEEE Bangladesh Section in 2018. Engr. Kh. Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, BOT, EU; Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, VC, EU; and Prof. Dr. Md. Aminul Hoque, Advisor, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, EU delivered motivational speeches regarding the core value of IEEE activities.

The summit was organized for the proper networking of the student members and the faculties from different universities. The prize-giving ceremony and closing ceremony were held at the end of the summit.

IUBAT holds seminar on "Brain Engineering: Future Opportunity and Feasibility"

International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) organised a seminar on "Brain Engineering: Future Opportunity and Feasibility" on May 12, 2018 at the Conference Hall in their campus.

The seminar began with an opening speech by Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Dr. Md. Zahid Hossain, Pro-VC, IUBAT with an introduction to the topic by Prof. Dr. Bishwajit Saha, Convener of the seminar. S. M. Mahabub Alam, Managing Director & CEO, Massive Star Studio Ltd. & Massive Business Academy was present as a guest speaker.

The purpose of the seminar was to disseminate knowledge on BCI, CBI, Bio-net, Bio-Money, AI and Robotics and to learn more about enhancing the powers of the human brain.

Prof. Dr. Abdur Rab, VC, IUBAT was also present during the seminar. The programme concluded with a speech by Prof. Dr. Abdul Haque, chairman of the session. Approximately 100 teachers and students from various departments of IUBAT attended the seminar.

BRACU hosts Anti-Bullying Awareness Campaign Week

BRAC University (BRACU) organised an "Anti-Bullying Awareness Campaign Week" from May 13-17, 2018 at their Mohakhali campus. The campaign was held with the message of "Respecting Each Other for Who We Are".

The BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), Office of Co-Curricular Activities (OCA), and the Counselling Unit jointly organised the programme. The campaign was inaugurated by Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb PhD, VC, BRACU.

Prof. Mehtab Khanam, Adviser, Counselling Unit and Chairperson, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, University of Dhaka, said that students should respond to bullying with a strong and bold body language, attitude, and confidence.

Students shared their experiences and experts from different sectors of mental and public health and legal aid also took part in the discussions. Video presentations were also made on victims of bullying in which academics and personalities shared their message on creating awareness.

Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, Founder and Chairperson of BRAC and Chairperson of the BRACU Board of Trustees; Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, PhD, BOT member, BRACU; Rokia Afzal Rahman, BOT member, BRACU; Sheepa Hafiza, Executive Director, Ain o Salish Kendra; and Sara Zaker, actor, business entrepreneur and social activist were also present among distinguished guests.

DISS observes "International Day of Art of Giving 2018"

Daffodil Institute of Social Science (DISS) observed "International Day of Art of Giving 2018" on May 17, 2018 at 71 Milonayoton of Daffodil International University (DIU) with the theme "Feed with Love". DISS distributed food among 1000 underprivileged children and their families near its Dhanmondi, Ashulia, and Chandpur campuses.
