Ten eminent citizens of the county today called upon the government to stop the “extra-judicial killings” and demanded a judicial enquiry into the incidents.

They also expressed their grave concern over the ongoing “killings of people” in the name of anti-drug drives and said it is not acceptable in any way in a democratic state.

"We are noticing that many people are being victimised of extra-judicial killing every day. Such type of killing is not acceptable in a democratic state," they said in a joint statement this evening.

The signatories are Prof Emeritus Anisuzzaman, Prof Hasan Azizul Haque, Ramendru Majumder, Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Nirmolendu Gun, Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Mofidul Hoque, Golam Quddus and Hasan Arif.

The country's constitution has guaranteed the people's right to live that cannot be snatched following such manner, they said expressing concern over the death of Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque.

Referring to the incident of Akramul’s death, they said that some sensational reports over the killing of people have been published in the mass and social media.

"But, it could not be known about the allegation brought against Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque prior to his killing," the signatories said.

"It’s unimaginable in a democratic state and society. Such type of incident is enough to make the entire anti-drug drive questionable," they said.
