Woman killed after rape in Moulvibazar
A woman was allegedly killed after being raped by two men at Kharpara area near Machua River in Rajnagor upazila of Moulvibazar on Friday, May 30.
After a case was filed in this regard by the victim's brother, one of the “rapists”, Abarak Mia, 22, of Chikka village in the upazila, was arrested on Saturday, June 2. He made a confessional statement to Moulvibazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Ziadul Haque on Sunday afternoon, where he stated that he and his accomplice had raped a woman of Osmaninagar upazila.
Abdul Hay, court inspector of Moulvibazar, said that according to the statement, the victim previously knew Abarak and his friend through phone conversations and had later met them several times.
On Wednesday, May 30, she came to Moulvibazar to meet the two men upon their request. After reaching Rajnagar upazila parishad in the evening, she was taken near the Mashua river by the two where they made sexual advances towards her. When she refused, they raped her.
Later, when she began screaming for help, they strangled her to death, tied bricks to her body and threw it into the river.
The police recovered the body from the river without identification on Thursday, May 31, and sent it to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Office-in-Charge of Rajnagar Police Station Shyamal Banik.
The victim's brother said that after he filed a case on Saturday night, the police identified the body, tracked down Abarak through mobile phone and arrested him from Potonushar area of Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar that very night. Abarak made his confessional statement in court the next day.
Attempts to arrest Abarak's accomplice are underway.
