BNP leaders want to meet Khaleda on Eid
BNP senior leaders want to meet BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia inside the jail on the Eid day.
“We have already applied to the authorities concerned to meet her on Eid day and hope we will get permission to meet her,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the party, told The Daily Star.
Fakhrul said party’s standing committee members will place floral wreaths at the party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the morning and then from there they will go to the jail gate to meet her, if they get permission from the authorities concerned.
“It is inhuman to detain a 73-year old woman inside the jail. It is nothing but an example of political vengeance. We have no words to condemn it,” he alleged.
Earlier on Saturday, A four-member team of Khaleda’s personal physicians met her in the jail on Nazimuddin Road and inspected her health condition.
After the meeting, the physicians claimed that Khaleda suffered a “mild stroke” in jail on June 5.
But the very next day, three ministers claimed that Khaleda did not suffer a mild stroke, rather her blood sugar level dropped.
The government wants to bring her in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) but Khaleda denied to go there.
On June 12, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Khaleda would be taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for necessary health checkups if the party wanted.
Meanwhile, BNP chief's younger brother Shamim Iskander wrote a letter to the home ministry on Tuesday, June 12 seeking permission for bearing all medical expenses if she was admitted to United Hospital.
The BNP also echoed the same urging the government to immediately admit Khaleda to the hospital.
On February 8, Khaleda was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
