'Drug peddler' hurt in Mohammadpur 'gunfight'
A suspected drug peddler was injured in what police claimed a gunfight in Mohammadpur area of Dhaka early today.
The injured, Falu, suffered bullet injuries on his leg and was admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), Officer-in-Charge of Mohammadpur Police Station Abul Kalam Azad told The Daily Star.
Falu was arrested yesterday from Dhaka Udyan area of Mohammadpur. Later, acting on his information, a police team along with Falu conducted a raid in Bosila area to recover a stash of arms and drugs around 12:00am, the OC said.
Sensing police presence, his cohorts opened fire on them, prompting the police to retaliate resulting in a “gunfight”, he added.
At one stage Falu's aides retreated, leaving injured Falu on the spot.
Meanwhile, four policemen were also hurt in the “gunfight”. They were undergoing treatment at Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital, the OC said.
Police recovered large amounts of illegal drugs from the spot, the OC added.
