Inspector Mamun Murder: Prime suspect on 7-day remand

The prime accused in the Special Branch (SB) Inspector Mamun Islam Khan murder case was placed on a seven-day remand yesterday.

A Dhaka court passed the remand order after police's detective branch (DB) produced the accused Rahmat Ullah, 35, in court seeking a 10-day remand prayer. 

A team of DB (East) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Rahmat from the capital's Uttara area on Tuesday night, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Police said that during primary interrogation, Rahmat admitted his involvement in Mamun's killing. Rahmat also disclosed the names of some of his associates and police are now conducting drives to arrest them, said DC Masudur Rahman.

Police said that Inspector Mamun, 38, went out of his Sabujbagh residence last Sunday and did not return. His cell phone was found switched off.

His elder brother Jahangir Alam Khan then filed a general diary with the Sabujbag police station the next day, said Abdul Kuddus, officer-in-charge of Sabujbagh Police Station.

After receiving the missing person complaint, DB police started investigating the matter and detained Rahmat first as a suspect.

Later, DB officials came to know from Rahmat that he and his cohorts had killed Mamun and left his burnt body in Gazipur.

In the meantime, local police in Gazipur had recovered a charred body from the district's Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday.

Based on Mamun's information, DB police contacted the local police who confirmed they had found a body. The victim's elder brother then identified the body to be Mamun's.

Later, a murder case was filed with Banani police station regarding the incident. 

Police sources said the criminals trapped Mamun by calling him to a residence in Banani on the pretense of celebrating a model's birthday.

There, they killed him.

Police are now looking for the 10 to 12 other suspects, who are allegedly involved in extorting money from people after trapping different people of the capital.
