Teachers take a stand, call to end repression
A group of teachers have taken their stand against repression on students and teachers at the university campuses across the country, calling out for justice into the incidents of assaults.
Teachers, converging from all over the country, placed the call at a rally under the banner of ‘Teachers Against Repression’ at Aporajeyo Bangla on Dhaka University campus today.
Among those who were at the programme were Prof Anu Muhammad of Economics Department of Jahangirnagar University, Prof MM Akash of Economics Department of Dhaka University, Prof Fahmidul Haq of DU’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tanzimuddin Khan, associate professor of International Relations at DU, Prof Ahmed Kamal of DU’s Department of History, and Prof CR Abrar of DU’s International Relations department.
Referring to the prime minister’s comment regarding her not understanding the logic behind the demand for quota reformation in government jobs, Prof Anu Muhammad said that she would have understood it if she talked with the agitating students and teachers just for some time.
“The government thinks that the anger and dissatisfaction will go away through repression and oppression. But that does not happen. The protest remains within. The movement for quota reform is the outcome,” he said.
He also said that the public universities of the country are in danger as the university administrations are being run by only those teachers who will forsake their self respect and will only follow instructions to protect the terrorists within the universities.
Claiming that the government has turned more shameless than autocratic governments, Prof Ahmed Kamal of DU’s History Department said that he came to join the program out of the call of his conscience.
Prof CR Abrar of DU’s International Relations department said that he does not do any politics but he saw the logic behind this movement and therefore expressed solidarity with the students.
