‘Guardiola would hate what Mourinho is doing’
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes was left unimpressed by Manchester United’s start to the preseason where they played out dull draws against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes.
Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho has the chance to fine tune his plans for the season as Manchester United returned to the United States for the second year in succession where they will be playing friendlies and International Champions Cup matches.
Scholes was particularly unhappy about the style of playing that Manchester United have adopted under Mourinho.
"As a football person, if you’re a coach and you see your team playing - he [Mourinho] may be happy [with the style of play]," he told beIN Sports.
“It’s a team who grind out results rather than really impresses you. That’s probably what he is happy with, that’s where he has been at his best over the years.
“If Guardiola was the manager of Manchester United he would hate what he was seeing - and it would be different."
Mourinho’s United finished 19 points behind Pep Guardiola’s City last season and Scholes is aware that the Red Devils going through another season without trophies will be a disaster. He suggested that since Mourinho focuses on results more than anything else, he will be judged on the results.
"But, the most important thing to him is results, he will be judged on that."
"Last year was a disappointing year. You don't have any divine right to win a trophy, I know that, but the way they performed in the league wasn't at the standard required," he added.
"They got beaten by Sevilla in the Champions League who are a poor team. Yes, they got to the final of the FA Cup, but every year that Manchester United don't win something is a disaster, and that will carry on."
