Spending 100m euro on Ronaldo is dangerous?
It seems that Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo will once again have to prove his doubters wrong, having completed a 100m euro move to a new country where he will play in a new league following his move from Real Madrid to Juventus.
Ronaldo, who won three back-to-back Champions League was the premier club competition’s top- scorer for the last six seasons. Ronaldo also has five Ballon d’Ors to his name as he equalled Lionel Messi, but according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said that signing Ronaldo was a risk that he did not want to take and informed that the star forward was first offered to Napoli.
"Spending so much money for a player at the end of his career is dangerous," De Laurentiis told Mediaset's Canale 5. "Let's not forget, [Ronaldo] has a certain age and in terms of the club's balance sheet, they have taken a gamble.
He insinuated that the move Juventus made might be because they were targeting commercial gains.
"Let's see if in the end, the commercial success of the group will be greater than their sporting success."
For Napoli the move did not make sense because the accounting did not make sense for Napoli.
"[Ronaldo] has one of the most intelligent football agents around, and I had breakfast with him to discuss Rui Patricio," De Laurentiis said, referring to the Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper who left for Wolverhampton Wanderers. "Then, when it became clear that Ronaldo was leaving Real Madrid, he offered me him. I imagined a transfer model based on the costs being recouped by the revenue caused by it.
"I had thought up a model which would see us break even. I proposed to Mendes that Napoli would keep the first €250m of revenue earned and then Ronaldo would receive the next €100m. But then Juve came in."
If anything, Ronaldo has only increased his effectiveness inside the penalty box in recent few seasons and his recent medical after completing Juventus signing has revealed that he has the fitness of a much younger man. While the move seemed surprising, a new challenge can push Ronaldo to greater heights, at least that is what Juventus and their fans will be hoping as the new season beckons. One might even consider attaining Ronaldo at 100m euro as a steal.
