HC rule for action against four cops for selling yaba

The High Court today issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to immediately take departmental action against four police officers including the superintendent of Cox’s Bazar police on charge of selling around 10 lakh yaba pills to drug traders.

Home secretary, inspector general of police, director general of the Directorate of Narcotics Control and deputy inspector general of police in Chittagong have been made respondents to the rule.

The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, a Supreme Court lawyer, seeking its order for departmental action and suspension of four police officers for selling the yaba pills. 

The four police officers are – Superintendent of Cox’s Bazar Police AKM Iqbal Hossain, the then officer-i- charge of Cox’s Bazar Detective Branch (DB) Monirul Islam (now in charge of Cox’s Bazar Police Box), the then sub inspector of Cox’s Bazar DB Kamal Hossain (now SI of Police Bureau of Investigation) and OC of Teknaf Police Station, writ petitioner’s counsel Advocate Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan told The Daily Star.

He said the police officers have reportedly sold to the drug traders around 10 lakh yaba pills, which were recovered in October last year in an anti-drug drive.

The allegation has been found true in a probe report, but the respondents have not taken any action against the police officers yet, he added.
