5 trafficked Indian children rescued, couple arrested

Police rescued five Indian children from ward No 8 of Basurhat municipality under Companiganj upazila of the district around 11:00pm on Saturday night and arrested a couple in this connection.

The arrestees are Rehana Begum, 50, and her husband Bahar Ullah, 60, of Musapur union of Companiganj upazila.

Seeing Rehana moving suspiciously with five children, local resident Abul Hashem asked her about the kids but the woman spoke irrelevantly.

Informed by Hashem, Sajidur Rahman Sajid, officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station, instantly sent SI Sumon Barua to the spot.

The SI arrested Rehana Begum and brought her to the police station along with the five children.

Afterwards, police arrested Rahana's husband Bahar too.

The rescued children are Shamim Choudhury, 12, son of Abul Basar of R K Pur Police Station under Udoypur Subdivision of Gumti district of Tripura State of India, and Shahin Choudhury 8, son of Emat Ullah, Takkin, 5, and his sister Nasrin Begum, 3, son and daughter of Obayed Ullah, and Md Nahid Hossain, son of Md Hossain of Gokulpur in the area.

As per information of Shamim, police contacted his father Abul Basar in Tripura.

Rehana Begum claimed that the children are her grandchildren while Shamim said they did not know the woman.

"A case has been filed with the police station against Rehana on charge of human trafficking. As we contacted with Durkendu Roy, officer-in-charge of R K Pur Police Station, he informed us that a case had been filed there for abduction of five children," said Abdul Mojid, officer-in-charge (Inquiry) of Companiganj Police Station.

At noon, Rehana Begum, Bahar Ullah, and the five children were produced before the court of Additional Senior Judicial Magistrate-1 Zebun Nahar.

The court ordered sending the arrested couple to jail and keeping the five rescued children in safe custody.
