Ronaldo, Modric and Salah nominated for FIFA’s best award
Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah had all fought for UEFA’s Player of the Season, which Modric won on August 30 and the three players will once again fight for top-place finish in another award ceremony after they were revealed as finalists for Best FIFA Football awards with the winner to be revealed on September 24.
There was no place for Barca star Lionel Messi but there were two first-time nominees in Luka Modric, who took Croatia to the World Cup final in Russia and Liverpool’s Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.
Ronaldo will be the top contender for the award once again having won it the previous two seasons. finished as Champions League top goal-scorer for the sixth consecutive season with 15 goals, won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid last season.
Modric is also part of that Madrid side that has dominated the Champions League in recent years and won the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup. Salah scored 44 goals in an incredible debut season for Liverpool before being robbed of his chance to make an impression in the Champions League final by an early injury.
Lionel Messi, who also did not have the best of World Cups as Argentina failed to make it past the Round of 16 stage, scored once and assisted twice in their Round of 16 exit against France at the World Cup. Messi however scored 34 goals in La Liga along with 13 assists as Barcelona won the league title.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic, World Cup-winning French coach Didier Deschamps and Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane became the three finalists for Best coach award.
