Tagore Terrace and Dhaka Gallery take their first step

The official inauguration of a unique rooftop reading & coffee lounge, Tagore Terrace and Dhaka Gallery began their voyage on November 2 at Banani 12. Named after Kabi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, the café's theme revolves around the idea of the cultural practice of the Bengalis.

During the inauguration ceremony, the chief guest of the evening, Minister of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh, Asaduzzaman Noor said, “This looks like a great place for adda (chit chat). It can truly regenerate our soul. I appreciate the initiative, as it will give us the opportunity to breathe amid the concrete structures.” He also expressed his desire to perform at Dhaka Gallery. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, noted Rabindra Sangeet singers Sadi Mohammad, Mita Haq and architect Pintu Khan were also present during the inaugural ceremony.

The initiator of the café and gallery, architect Mustapha Khalid Palash said, “The idea of Tagore Terrace spurred from the ongoing aggression of the western culture overshadowing over ours. There is no one better than Rabindranath Tagore to lead the path of revival.”

With soothing music in the background and a rich collection of writings of Tagore and on him, the café's interior is bound to have a magnetic effect on the visitors. Spending hours with a cup of hot coffee would not be too hard. The two thousand square feet gallery offers an intimate space for the art lovers. Above all, the heartiness of the people associated with the initiative was evident. Much like the lines of Tagore, Ami Rupe Tomay Bholabona, Bhalobashay Bholabo ( I will not allure you with my looks, but with my love).
