Catching up with the Folk Queen
Besides being a household name, Momotaz, dubbed the Folk Queen, represents Bangladesh when it comes to showcasing traditional stories, music and the common people. The artiste drew a large number of admirers, fans and listeners recently at the Dhaka International Folk Fest (DIFF). She took out a little time to chat about her music, her life and more.
You have always been regular at the Dhaka International Folk Fest. How do you feel about performing for the people?
I always feel good when I have to perform in front of an audience. They give me strength. I have always been with the Dhaka International Folk Fest, even though I think I missed out last year. However the year before was a blast, like this year has been!
You performed your popular numbers at the festival, even though you focused more on the genres you are more comfortable with. What was your initial plan for the song list at the event?
I always try to showcase my true identity during performances -- present the music that helped me to be who I am today. I am a Baul by heart and always like to perform the songs that give me and the listeners a spiritual satisfaction. At the Folk Fest, I also planned to do some of the songs from my 'cassette days' which are still remembered and enjoyed by everyone.
Not only do you practice and perform, you are occupied with so much more -- being at the parliament, working with the people in your constituency, getting involved in charities, taking care of your family and so on. How do you manage all this?
It is quite a challenge. But I have learnt to manage my time and do my best. I enjoy doing all that I do, which is why I can balance my work and activities. Even a day of rest at home makes me feel restless!
Every year the Folk Fest has many bands from all over the world showcasing their cultural elements in Dhaka. Have you ever thought of collaboration between the different musical talents?
The collaboration between folk artistes from all over the world is a fantastic idea. This can be suggested to the organisers, maybe next year. Considering the fact that so many cultural elements are coming together on one platform, it would be a great opportunity for a cultural exchange, and sharing of ideas between artistes as well.
