Tax offices to stay open Friday, Saturday

Tax offices will remain open tomorrow and the day after for filing of income tax returns ahead of the December 2 deadline set by the government.

This year, the deadline for return filing has been extended to December 2, Khandokar Khurshid Kamal, first secretary at National Board of Revenue, said.

"We will remain open during the weekends so that taxpayers can submit their income tax return ahead of the deadline," he told The Daily Star this afternoon.

However, banks will not stay open during the weekends. Therefore, taxpayers will not be able to complete bank formalities by today can do so on December 2.

Income or direct tax is the second biggest source of revenue for the government after VAT.

In recent years, the number of tax return submission has been increasing after the several measures taken by the National Board of Revenue to encourage compliance.
