Cop gets 4-yr jail in dowry case
A Madaripur court today sentenced a police official to four years’ imprisonment in a dowry case filed in 2014.
The convict Mahidur Rahman, 31, son of Motahar Mia of Digholpara village under Madaripur Sadar upazila, was a sub-inspector of Sutrapur Police Station in Dhaka.
Judge Mohammad Hossain of Madaripur Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court handed down the verdict in presence of the convict.
The court also fined Mahidur Tk 4,000 or he will have to serve two months more in jail in default. He was sent to jail after the verdict.
According to the case statement, Mahidur Rahman married Sikha Akter, 28, daughter of Makbul Fakir of Khatial village under Kalkini upazila in Madaripur in 2010. Mahidur demanded dowry of Tk 5 lakh from his in-laws to buy a house in Madaripur town in 2014 and tortured his wife Sikha Akter over the demand.
As Sikha’s family refused to give dowry, Mahidur sent her to her father's house, the case statement says, adding that Sikha later filed a case against five persons including Mahidur under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Madaripur Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on April 23 in 2014.
The four other accused in the case were acquitted when the charge sheet was submitted.
