Democracy is confined: Khaleda
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia today said the country's democracy is under attack in a bid to destroy it forever.
"Democracy has been shackled. Conspiracy is on to banish democracy forever," Khaleda Zia said in a press statement on the occasion of Shaheed Nur Hossain Day.
In the statement, the former prime minister said conspiracy is also going on to establish a one-party rule in disguise the country by holding a one-sided election.
On this day in 1987, Nur Hossain, a young pro-democracy activist, sacrificed his life to oust the autocratic regime of HM Ershad.
"Nur Hossain's dream has yet not been fulfilled," Khaleda said in the statement signed by the party's spokesperson Ashaduzzaman Ripon.
Khaleda said the destroyed democracy was restored through a movement in 1990 but it is again in chains.
"Nur Hossain is our inspiration in our fight to restore democracy. We will have to strive to get back a free and democratic Bangladesh," said the BNP chief.
